Kidneys aren't acting right this month.

Written as “Kidney Girl” on the original Cystinuria Blog · 1 min read

Lately I've been feeling like my kidneys are just sorta chugging along. I haven't had my GFR checked in a while, mostly because my urologist is surgery-happy, and I'm not. I can't recover from a procedure and go to school at the same time.

So lately, like this entire month, my kidneys have been achy, I'm extra thirsty, and my muscles have been extra/randomly crampy as if my electrolytes are off. For those who don't know, muscle cramps are common for people with kidney disease, and since this is a new, long-lasting symptom, I'm a little worried; obviously not worried enough to go to my kidney doc.

Yesterday afternoon. I was sitting in class, when my lower right ab muscle tightened up out of nowhere. It was such a small area, and my abs (ab, lol) had never cramped up before. The pain was 9/10, and I'm just sitting there silently doubled over with a red face. It lasted for 30 miserable seconds and was gone. Besides from that day, my back muscles are always cramping. I had an ankle cramp too lol. Who gets a cramp on the top of their ankle?

I also wake up in the middle of the night feeling like I haven't had water for weeks.

Yes, I know I should be getting my ass in to see the doc, but honestly, I really don't care other than the discomfort I've been feeling. Maybe I'm a little depressed, or just stressed from school, or maybe indifference/depression is a psychological symptom of CKD? Ugh. Despite not caring enough to go to Stanford, I have found myself wondering if that 33-year kidney death date is a little off...
